‘ached grew print jot’ is a drawing class that takes the form of an event-based framework, a kind of anatomical arrangement, impressed and observed through varying material means that include, music, mediation, performance, sculpture, moving image and a short lecture. Moving away from the physical act of drawing, ‘ached grew print jot’ focuses on paying close attention to a particular object or subject and those processes attuned to the act of observation – mediation, musing and study. An ensemble that hopes to encourage a heightened sensibility of looking and an examination of the mind in the structuring of that experience. All so often our thoughts go beyond anything we engage with here and now; they’re off in the future or combined with remnants from the past, ached grew print jot draws attention to that sway, one that hovers between what is physically present and our interpretation of that presence.

 ’ached grew print jot’ will also host the launch of a publishing project, titled Household Words. This is an on-line publication that focuses on expanding the format of criticism and heralds a space for personality and authenticity, together with literary style. This publishing project will be made available in a hardcopy format.

All in all ‘ached grew print jot’ evokes through keen observation a kind of dynamic space where creativity, interpretation, ritual and critique can be mediated on and ultimately hopes to remind ourselves of the pleasures of looking in all its complexity and detail.

Dublin City Council invites applications from professional visual artists interested in a medium term letting of a day studio at The Red Stables, St. Anne’s Park, Dublin 3.

The Carriage House Studio is situated on the ground level of The Red Stables, in an attractive courtyard set in 270 acres of parkland. The studio is available to rent for €70 + VAT per week inclusive of broadband, electricity, heating, rates, water and refuge charges. A maximum license of three years will apply, renewable on a yearly basis. The studio dimensions are 14.5 x 18 feet.

 Artists are asked to submit the following:

• A covering letter outlining a description of art practice, proposed studio for use, and reasons why occupancy of a studio in The Red Stables is important to career development.
• A current CV.
• Documentation of work.
• Any special requirements, for example in terms of Access.

 Applicants should have a degree or diploma from a recognised third level art college and have participated in an exhibition/visual art event.

The Christmas Art Programme at The Red Stables will include Family Drop in Workshops with artists Fionnuala Hanahoe and Mary Noonan on 3^rd /4th and 10^th December.  The artists will work with participants to create Christmas tree decorations for The Red Stables Christmas tree and their own Christmas tree. On Sunday 11^th and Saturday 17^th December, Artist Martina Galvin will facilitate a Family Drop in Workshop making Christmas angels, decorations, stars and writing Santa letters. Artist Sharon Lynch and dramatist Fiona McDonagh will provide two fun filled Christmas themed drama/art workshop; Christmas Butterfly Picnic is for children aged  5 – 8 and Jingle Bell Jumping and Drawing is for children aged 8 – 11.  

Both worshops take place on Sunday 11^th December.  Booking essential.

Artist, Maeve Clancy will create a festive wonderland in the exhibition space with delicate handmade paper cut outs, great for children and adults to explore, join Maeve on Saturday 10^th December for a paper cut out demonstration and the chance to make your own.

Join Cllr Jane Horgan-Jones for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony which will take place at 3.30 on Saturday10^th December.  The Councillor will also unveil a model of the house which was originally part of the Ardilaun Estate in St. Anne’s park, owned by the Guinness family from 1835. The replica  model was made and donated to the park by  local resident, Michael Mahon. Singers from ‘The Third Day Chorale’ will provide festive music and Christmas Carols. This will be followed by Conor Lamberts Custard Pie Puppet Company’s colourful children’s Christmas puppet  show, which embodies the Christmas mood and generates lots of belly laughs and little giggles from the audience. The puppet show is live, interactive and will feature the ever popular Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, ‘Cackeleen’, the silly witch and many more. ‘My paintings express my personal and cultural histories having grown up in the seaside town of Skerries in north county Dublin. I have a deep affinity for the elemental power of water and the mysterious forces of nature. My paintings evolve over time through a process of rich layers of pigment. I use both volume and colour to shape the image that flows across the canvas. The rhythms and frequencies of pigment application create depths and swells on the paintings surface. Colour is used to heighten and expand the work’s emotional range. My pallet is not drawn from the need for representation but from the lyrical and emotive narrative in my art.’ Angie Grimes

Peter Burns creates paintings and sculptures in a variety of materials and has a very tactile approach to his work. Based on his research into literature, art history, myth and allegory, Peter’s paintings are often playful re-workings of romantic themes with allusions to faraway places. The sculptures are often very fragile, an important feature which lends the sculptures a warmth and pathos. Since graduating with a Masters in Fine Art from NCAD (2009), Peter has been involved in numerous solo and group exhibitions, the most recent being a solo exhibition in the Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast and as part of a group show at this years Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition in Dublin.  Anne Hendrick’s paintings deal with the nature of reality and the truth within the seen image by simulating architectural, psychological and social spaces or situations within a landscape. The work questions ideas surrounding representation and the idea of an embellished truth. Dualist themes are prevalent; ambiguous narratives are slowly revealed. Anne Hendrick graduated with a BA Joint Honours in Fine Art Painting and History of Art from NCAD (2006). In 2011 her work has featured as part of a number of group exhibitions including New Connections at Rua Red, Dublin.  Most of Mary Noonan’s work is watercolour and drawing-based. The pieces chosen for this exhibition are a reflection of her research into Irish folklore and superstition and her own upbringing on a farm in the west of Ireland. The work is informed by a sense of the uncanny, and explores ideas relating to identity, landscape and cultural history. Since graduating with a Masters in Fine Art from NCAD 2009, Mary Noonan’s work has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including the 181st Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition (2011), Dublin and TULCA, Galway Arts Centre (2010).

The Red Stables Artists Studios is included in VISIT 2011 on Saturday 22^nd October. The artist’s studios will be among eighteen studios in Dublin city open to the public and will involve over two hundred and fifty visual artists. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet artists and explore their working environment and visual arts practise. The exhibition space at The Red Stables will feature video work by Alan James Butler, recipient of The Irish Residential Studio Award 2011 – 2012 and photo etched prints by Lars Wikström, a Swedish artist, resident at The Red Stables International Studio during July and August 2011.

Swedish artist, Lars Wikström is currently residing in The Red Stables International studio until the end of August. Lars uses various printing techniques in his work, both old and new. He combines digital photography with traditional printing methods. He recently gave a photo etching demonstration and will give a presentation on his work in Graphic  Studio Dublin, Distillery House on Wednesday 17^th August at 5pm.

Kevin Kavanagh Gallery

Kevin Kavanagh is pleased to present Room Outside, an exhibition of new and older work that concerns itself with the idea of landscape but more specifically the artist’s representation of a room outside whether it’s a real physical space or an imagined constructed space.

Using Northern Forest (see image ) by Michelle Considine as a starting point, the exhibition presents new paintings by Oliver Comerford, Stephen Loughman, Dermot Seymour, Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Paul McKinley. A selection of Nevan Lahart’s  Goya’s Gaia that featured at Preview Berlin 2010, and two recent photographs by Sean Lynch that featured at Volta 7 Basel (2011). A recent watercolour by German artist Karin Brunnermeier and a new work on paper by Michelle Considine. Two photographs from Patrick Jolley’s Ice House, a selection of work from Gary Coyle’s ongoing project , At Sea, the Daily Practice of Swimming and finally sculpture by Tadhg McSweeney and German artist Ulrich Vogl.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery

This exhibition – the first such show to take place at the Douglas Hyde Gallery since 1990 – is an informal gathering of Irish paintings that have been inspired, in various ways, by landscape. Intended to have an air of lightness and ease, it is also a reflection of darker, more ambiguous, moods and currents in the world.

I invited artists to take part in this summer exhibition in much the same way as I might put together a list for a party. Some are old friends; others are acquaintances; a few are people I don’t really know but whose work I find interesting for one reason or another. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to make the gathering more comprehensive or all-embracing.

To give the exhibition a particular focus, artists were asked to propose two or three works that might throw some light on the idea of ‘liminality’ – in-between places, edges, thresholds, points at which something is transformed – and I chose the final image from their suggestions.  It has been an interesting and enjoyable process, and I thank all the artists for their enthusiasm and generosity.

An exhibition of mixed media drawings, paintings and sculptural works by Mayo-born artist Mary Noonan. “This work is a reflection of my research into Irish folklore and superstition relating to ‘fairy-faith’, particularly from the late 19th and early 20th century. It also has a direct relationship to my own upbringing on a farm in Mayo. The materials and processes I use, such as tearing and cutting the paper, become a metaphor for psychological aspects of uncovered narrative. The work is informed by a sense of the uncanny and explores ideas relating to identity, landscape and cultural history.” Mary has both a BA and MFA in Painting from NCAD. Currently based in Dublin, she has exhibited widely since 2000 including COE Claremorris Open Exhibition (2006, 2007, 2010), RUA Annual Show (2008) RHA Annual Show (2011, 2010) and was an invited artist at TULCA 2010. This is Mary’s 6th solo exhibition.
